Rajojen Eurooppa (The Borders of Europe) - Presentation of a book by Enrica Rigo, 19.5 Helsinki
Researcher Enrica Rigo will present her new book Rajojen Eurooppa (The Europe of Borders) at Mannerheim-sali, Uusi ylioppilastalo (Mannerheimintie 5A, 5th floor), on Wednesday the 19th of May, 5pm-7pm.Rajojen Eurooppa is the first analysis of European border policy published in Finnish. It provides conceptual tools for critical migration discussion which so far revolves mostly around alienophobia and multiculturalism, around themes of fear and (self) pity.
The growing number of migrants in Europe has led to the necessity of rethinking the relationships between nationality and borders. Borders do not just exclude people but produce differences and hierarchies inside Europa. Rigo sees migrants not as victims but as actors who strive to make their own lives better.
Current themes on borders and movement, such as the situation of Roma migrants in Finland, will be discussed with Rigo. Roma are EU citizens but the authorities are still destroying their homes. Are the Roma legal or illegal citizens? Which conclusion should we draw in a situation where their have a right of stay according to the letter of the law but are clearly illegal according to the actual implementation of the law?
Enrica Rigo is a researcher in Philosoply of Law in the University of Roma Tre.
The discussion is organized by Like and Aut-op. It is held in English.
Welcome!
