IV. Finnish EMN National Network Seminar

HOLISTIC  APPROACH TO  MIGRATION – ASSUMPTIONS AND CHALLENGES

 

We are pleased to invite you  to the IV. National Network Seminar of the Finnish EMN NCP, held in the the House of the Estates, Snellmaninkatu 9- 11,  Helsinki,  on the 27th of September.

 

This year the keynote speaker is Dr. Elspeth Guild. Professor Guild is an internationally acknowledged expert in the field of European immigration law. She previously acted as Special Advisor to the House of Lords Inquiry into Economic Migration in the EU, and is currently involved in training judges in EU law. She is frequently requested to make submissions to parliamentary committees on the subject and she acts as an occasional expert to international organisations such as the European Commission, UNHCR, and the Council of Europe. She combines her contributions to the department with a part-time chair as professor of European Migration Law at the University of Nijmegen in Holland. She is the co-editor of the recent publication:  Constructing and Imagining Labour Migration – Perspectives of Control from Five Continents (Ashgate, 2011).  http://www.kingsleynapley.co.uk/profiles/eguild In line with the title of the seminar, Professor  Guild examines the assumptions behind the immigration and naturalisation legislation and policies within the EU from a holistic perspective, addressing the social reality and human rights aspects of the structures constructed within the EU.

 

The main findings of the EMN 2011 thematic studies: Visa policy as Migration Channel  and  Practical Measures for Reducing Irregular Migration,  as well as the EU-wide comparative study on the EMN 2010 thematic study Satisfying Labour Demand through Migration will also be presented at seminar.   The English – Finnish bilingual publication of this synthesis report will also be launched and distributed at the seminar.   

 

The presentations of the Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) and KEHYS  - The Finnish NGO Platform to the EU will discuss  migration issues from the perspective of the countries of orgin, or sending countries from the point of view how their particular expertise is linked and can be best utilised in the migration chain.

The languages of the seminar are Finnish and English, with simultaneous translation both ways.
