Seminars on multiculturalism at the University of Turku
This series of seminars functions as a multidisciplinary base for researchers and students of history, sociology and other fields of study.
The seminars discuss the concept of multiculturalism, as well as its policies and practices carried on in various social and cultural environments.
The series of seminars starts with Fidipro Professor Peter Kivisto (Augustana College, Rock Island, IL), the Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Turku. This spring semester, he holds three seminars on issues frequently brought up within the multiculturalism discourse. The seminars take place as part of the cross-disciplinary project, Multiculturalism as a New Pathway to Incorporation, funded by the Academy of Finland.
On February 26th Professor Kivisto will specifically focus on the official multicultural policy that Canada, said to have adopted the most multicultural policies in the Western world, launched after about two decades of edging towards it, paying particular attention to the legislative perspective.
On March 2nd, he shall discuss the importance that citizenship plays within the debates on multiculturalism. March 5th features the last meeting of Professor Kivisto’s series of seminars, titled "Multiculturalism après la lutte", where he examines the claim that multiculturalism is a dead, failed policy or a general approach to the integration of minority groups.
The series of lectures for this semester is closed by Ismo Söderling, the new director of Institute of Migration, and his presentation on Finnish migration policies after the Second World War. The last lecture takes place on March 16th at 14.15, in Edu 2.
